She’s decided it’s time to quit smoking. Which as a non-smoker myself, I think is great and really want to help her do this. I’m thinking as a joke, to get her a few boxes of Nicotine Patches. Is this a good or bad idea?

well….
It would depend on how sensitive she is to the subject. If she has a great sense of humor, it could be funny. But as a person related to many smokers, they can get very, very testy over their little nic buddies and the idea of giving them up.
My grandma is *still* mad at me for telling her to quit smoking when I was 7 years old (which was 34 years ago!).
