Do Nicotine Products Really Help You Stop Smoking Cigarettes

It is sad to say that the success rate for cigarette smokers who use nicotine gum and patches is pretty low. Only somewhere around 7 to 11% of smokers actually quit smoking long term after using these products. One reason for this is because actually quitting for good is always in the hands of the smoker. These nicotine products address the issue of supplying the body with low doses of nicotine, but they do nothing to address one of the most serious addictions involved with smoking cigarettes and that is the habit itself.

A smoker is programmed after so many years to want a cigarette at certain times of the day or during or after specific events such as eating, with coffee, after sleeping, when driving, or on the phone. These are occasions that often trigger a smoker to want a cigarette because they have become accustomed to having one at these times. This means that the smoker is going to have a battle to win over cigarettes all during the day everyday. This battle can last for as long as it takes for the smoker to reprogram their self to endure these things without a cigarette. Doing this is what can makes so many smokers unsuccessful at quitting. They simply can not get over their emotional attachment.

It is important that a smoker that is trying to quit cigarettes finds something to do with their hands. They try things such as handling a pencil when they are sitting idle or squeezing a ball designed to help relieve tension. What many smokers might not know is that after just a few days without smoking, they have gotten the nicotine out of their physical system and what is left for them to do is the task of getting the desire to smoke out of their head, but this is much easier said than done.

The only real product out there that allows you to still engage in the act of smoking itself while delivering nicotine, are electric cigarettes. This product is not marketed as a way to stop smoking because many smokers just want to continue to smoke. The electronic cigarette does not have the deadly chemicals that tobacco does, nor does it produce the secondhand smoke or smell. They come in lites, full flavor, and menthol. The only way for this product to be helpful to someone trying to quit is that you can actually smoke it, you just do not have the other worries that you get from burning tobacco. This will address the desire to continue putting something in your mouth, but it would be up to the smoker to lessen this practice over time. It might help the quitting process be less painful in other words.

Many smokers have decided to use this product and not quit smoking because the harmful side affects are thought to be so much less than tobacco cigarettes. This is an option besides quitting that those who want to smoke but hate the health risks involved in smoking have not had in the past. So, whether or not you used the product to help you slowly decrease your physical and emotional attachment to smoking or to continue to smoke the product is really up to the smoker.

You've got some good points there. I've found it easier to stop smoking tobacco products because I have an electronic cigarette. The habits were easier to break than with my previous stop smoking attempts and I've reached a point where the e cig is hardly ever used now.
