How Old Do You Have To Be To Buy Nicotine Gum?

I smoke–illegally–and need to quit. Can you buy nicotine gum without being 18? Or is there somewhere I can get a perscription without my parents finding out?

You need a prescription if you’re under 18, but just about any doctor should be willing to give you a prescription without telling your parents — just ask to make sure. That may not even be necessary because the gum may not be behind the counter — it isn’t at a my supermarket, for example, and the checkout clerks at a supermarket aren’t going to know about the rule. Also, someone posted here to say that if they went to the pharmacy and just said they were getting it for their dad — the clerk sold it to them. Or if you look close to 18, you may just be able to buy it — it’s not like tobacco, they aren’t going to sell it to a 12-year-old but they aren’t going to check ID. You can also order it from an online pharmacy like drugstore.com.
Suggest you try the Commit lozenges, by the way — I found that they were easier to use than the gum and they were more effective in studies. Main problem is if you forget and chew off and swallow some of them you can get heartburn — that can’t happen with the gum. Also, this stuff tastes horrible the first time you use it, I almost gave up, but by the second day the bad taste has gone away.

18 seeing how you should be able to get cigarettes until then you can get a prescription but it might be hard to get with out your parents finding out so if you have any friends or older brother someone who’s over 18 and you can trust not to snitch try getting them to get it for you

    18. You can get it over the counter (depending on where you live.) If you can get someone to buy you your cig’s… I’m sure you won’t find it a problem to get someone to buy you the patch!

Assuming that you get somebody to buy your cigarettes can they not buy you gum or patches instead?

You can’t get rid of the smell of smoke on you or your clothes so your parents probably have an idea that you smoke. So why not enlist their help? Parents appreciate honesty and the desire to change things and are the most likely people to help you.
