You continue to chew the nicotine gum in this way until all the nicotine has gone, or the craving is satiated. This is roughly thirty minutes. The gum should only be used for up to twelve weeks with a formula of approximately one piece to be chewed every one to two hours for the first six weeks. This gradually decreases in the remaining weeks so that in the last two weeks you should only be chewing one piece every four to eight hours. Light smokers should use the 2mg types and heavy smokers the 4mg – with the same chewing formula for both. It has been advised that pregnant woman should not use any form nicotine replacement therapy.

If used for too long, nicotine gum (and other nicotine replacement therapies) has been associated with the contraction of oral cancer. Side effects can include hiccups and a feeling of constriction of the throat when too much nicotine tainted saliva is accidentally swallowed. As well as this, there is the risk of gum disease.
