Smoking, Nicotine and Health

The use of tobacco and its resulting nicotine addiction is responsible for killing more than 430,000 people each year in the United States, more people than die from car accidents, homicide, suicide, fire, alcohol, cocaine, heroin, and AIDS combined. Tobacco use in some form accounts for around one in three of all deaths from cancer in the United States. Smoking is responsible for 83% of all lung cancer deaths. Smoking also causes cancers of the mouth, larynx, pharynx, esophagus, kidney, bladder, pancreas, uterus, cervix, and some leukemia. Cigarette smoking also can cause lung diseases that can be just as serious as lung cancer. Smokers may develop chronic bronchitis, with their airways blocked up with mucous, forcing them to cough frequently; and, of course, smoking can lead to emphysema, making it difficult for the lungs to perform their function of supplying adequate oxygen to the body. People with these problems tend to tire more easily and this influences them to avoid getting the exercise they need to promote their health. Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 65,000 deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Read more »

Nicotine, Addiction, and Stopping Smoking

Nicotine is an interesting substance. It is an alkaloid this is a bitter tasting poison manufactured by plants and stored in their leaves and stems to stop them being eaten by animals. It is a friendly warning from the plant world to the animal world saying ‘don’t eat this it will make you ill’.

Humans are well known for living out of harmony with their natural environment.

I’ve yet to treat a smoker who isn’t surprised when I tell them that nicotine is a highly toxic poison. They don’t know that they are smoking something that is three times as toxic as arsenic and more lethal than strychnine. They are also surprised that nicotine is used as a pesticide and is so toxic that a few drops of the pure substance on the skin can be fatal. This is quite important. Nicotine does not have to be ingested to kill you. Read more »

What is the Quit Smoking Patch, And Could it Work For You?

The nicotine patch, or the “quit smoking patch” as it’s sometimes called, has been useful for many people who have successfully quit smoking, even after many years of being heavy smokers, and is considered to be a form of what’s known as nicotine replacement therapy, or NRT. The quit smoking patch is one of the most popular types of NRT as it’s easy to use and doesn’t require a prescription. Also, today there are the regular nicotine patches as well as an all-herbal patch that doesn’t contain any of the highly addictive substance.

The nicotine, or non-nicotine, patch is transdermal and applied to the skin, usually somewhere on the upper body, with the upper arm being the most often used area. The thin, clear patches are replaced on a daily basis and one should not smoke while wearing one, in fact, doing so is actually rather dangerous as the levels of nicotine in the body would be at an extreme level.
