Making a firm decision to quit smoking is easy, carrying out that decision is quite another thing. There are so many ways that a person can try to quit. IF you are going to quit smoking for your health and to save money, why do you want to spend money on products that say they help you quit and then they give you the nicotine you are addicted to. Would it not be just as easy to smoke a few cigarettes a day as you step down to quitting? This is just as effective as spending all of that money on nicotine patches and gum and still suffering because you want to smoke. You can either spend five dollars on one pack of cigarettes and make them last you for a week, or spend around 20 to 40 bucks for some patches that only last for about a week.
When a person decides to quit cold turkey, you automatically begin saving money and you immediately stop the damage smoking is doing to your lungs and other parts of your body. However, your stress level is likely to go through the roof. You are likely to be irritable and perhaps become depressed from it all. This is why so many people that try to quit this way fail because they just can not take it anymore. It might be the ideal way to quit, but it does not always work.
Gradually stepping down from smoking does require a lot of control and determination as well. You have to be committed to quitting or you will find yourself slipping right back into your old patterns of smoking whenever you like. You have to set some ground rules and stick to them. You have to bite the bullet and start to do without the cigarettes when you want them the most like after meals or when you first get up, You have to stop smoking while you drive, when your on the phone, and when you have coffee if you drink it. These are all triggers for most smokers and they have to be dealt with if you want to be successful.
Either way you decide to quit might work for you. If cold turkey does not work, try stepping down. If stepping down is not working, try cold turkey. In the end quitting smoking is going to depend totally on you and your desire to stop. If you want it badly enough you can do it. If not, you will not be successful. Seek all of the help you can. Support groups or getting a friend or family member to quit along with you can be great help.
