Why Do Nicotine Patches Cause You To Have Vivid Bizarre Dreams?

I am presently using the nicotine patch and dream frequently. I find most of the dreams interesting and wonder where they came from.

Nicotine patch should be used during the day; not at night when you’re supposed to be sleeping. If you persist on this ; you’ll ruin your health from sleep deprivation and quality sleep at that. Be the dreams bizarre or interesting; the cause of it is the nicotine which is being released in small doses. Nicotine is a stimulant.and can make you weiry, jittery; and totally weird.

Got to agree with wolfshie. I had been using the 24 hour nicotine patches for about three days, they sure didn’t work for me. I had random dreams that I remembered but I would wake up every two hours though. First day I was a bit tired, second day I felt a bit drained, third day I was mentally exhausted and totally drained.

They didn’t work for me, I bought 16 hour nicotine patches, didn’t wear one last night and I woke up this morning feeling really refreshed.

    Avoid!

I have used nicotine patches before and not succeeded in quiting smoking.
I have used them this last week in a renewed effort to quit. Every patch I have seen says to wear them 24 hours and to reapply at the same time each day.

They also say the vivid dreams may occur , and it it is a PROBLEM, then try wearing the 16 hrs a day.

For me while the dreams are vivid and I recall them, they do not disturb my sleep. In fact I find them interesting, and I feel well rested in the morning. Every bit of sleep science has told me that REM sleep is what allows us to feel rested, and is vital for our mental health.

I would assume that the effects of vivid dreams likely manifest via altering REM sleep.
So why do I see so many people advising against the directions on the packaging and even when someoone isn’t losing sleep over their dreams?

I have very recently quit smoking for the first time after 17 years. The doctor has put me on a 24hour patch which I am to wear at night and replace every morning. I also have an inhillator (which is brilliant and an amazing aid).

I have to say that the first 2 nights of wearing the pach have put me right off the 24 hour patches.

Dont get me wrong, I am determined to stay smoke free and will take any help and advice that I’m given by the doctor.

However, the dreams that I’ve experienced have been incredible. SO much more detailed and vivid than I have ever experienced. Completely wild and just utterly crazy, with almost a complete memory of the entire experience. Unlike any other dreams Ive had, these have been in “real time” with a complete time line through them with no skipping from one part to the other, if you understand what I mean. As realistic as being awake, apart from the world I inhabit has been mental! Flying on a jumbo jet through the woods, hitting trees, feeling the acceleration, the impacts and still flying, my very straight laced mother being very drunk, jumping on my back and knocking me over in the town centre, being arressted then fitted up for all manor of crimes by some very very dodgy police! I have read that there can be very erotic and also very frightening dreams, I’m yet to have one of these but so far, I cant really deal with the intensity of the dreams and the continous waking inbetween.

I work very long hours with an early start, so will have to change the NRT to avoid these dreams. That said, if I have a day off, I’ll wear the patch again to see what adventures my brain takes me on!

At the end of the day, those who die of lung cancer and other smoking related diseases, dont have the option to dream, so I will do whatever it takes but I just wanted to share my experience.

I have taken my patch off tonight and washed my arm, so we’ll see what happens and judge how I feel in the morning.

I am not critsising the patches because of the dreams, to be fair, I have had no withdrawall symptoms at all!!

But if you are going smoke free, look out for these dreams, they could be the most amazing experience or the most frightening or a combination of both.

Enjoy your dreams non smokers and your new healthier, longer life!!!

    Bed time now.

    Peace. x
